  1. Thea O’Brien: A Story of Compassion

November 26, 2009 by Sandra Hindson, Category: Reflection & Articles

CAG_6575During the week of the release of the Charter for Compassion I spoke with several residents and Karma Yogis  about their experience of compassion.  Thea O’Brien, a senior resident who has lived at the Ashram since 2000, came to me one morning in Shakti, home to Lightwaves, to say she had a story. I was immediately intrigued.  Listening to her story was bearing witness to Divine Mother’s protection which is present in potentially life-threatening moments. Here is her story…

  2. Challenge for Compassion

Charter for Compassion“Compassion needs an open door of acceptance.” – Swami Radha. On October 15th, Karen Armstrong spoke to a large gathering in Ottawa about her new book The Case for God. Several Radha Yoga Centre people including Erna Herwig and Joan Gamble were among the sold out crowd. Her words were refreshing reminders of the importance of commitment and engagement in our lives. Karen eloquently shared her practical views about spirituality and religion. Here you will read the musings of both teachers on Karen’s words and a real life practice of compassion.

  3. Free Ticket to Compassion: Meeting With the Dalai Lama

November 3, 2009 by Faith, Category: News & Events
Recently I experienced the presence of the Dalai Lama – in Calgary’s huge Saddledome, alone in what they refer to as “the nose bleed section” high up in the rafters, 18,000 or so people seated below me, between His Holiness and myself.
He is indeed a “simple monk” to use his words. He is simple and profound. In this huge, diverse crowd of people I’m sure I could have heard a pin drop as he spoke about compassion.
Three aspects of his presence especially touched me personally and I list them below, not in his precise words but from my personal understanding:
    1. The Dalai Lama said that even the most hardened criminal has at least a spark of compassion within – we all do. Why? he asked. “Because we all had a mother” he said, in the breathless silence.
    2. “Compassion is not always sweet, it can be harsh. Ask a good parent” said the Dalai Lama.
    3. The Dalai Lama focused on the youth and after his talk gave them an opportunity to ask him questions – suggesting they ask “intelligent questions”.  Which they did.  When the Master of Ceremonies tried to speed things to a conclusion, as is the Calgary way, the Dalai Lama held up his hand and said: “We will have time for more questions from the young people”.
Throughout my time in his presence, way up high in the rafters, my mind would flow back and forth to Swami Radha; Swami Radhananda; Yasodhara Ashram and then the Dalai Lama’s words.
I knew as I have before, how simple and true our connection is, in the One Light.
I know how blessed and privileged I am to be who i am, in Swami Radha’s teachings, in the work I embrace – connected with compassion in love and ligh
Thank you Divine Mother, I found Swami Radha.

    Karen Armstrong speaks on compassion

Religious scholar Karen Armstrong is on a global mission for compassion. The essence of religion, she says, is not about belief, but about compassionate behavior. The Golden Rule’s simple directive “do unto others as you would have them do unto you” is shared by all faiths, and Armstrong’s Charter for Compassion aims to bring it back to the forefront of global consciousness. Yasodhara Ashram has recently joined this international, multi-faith network of partners to help make Armstrong’s vision a reality. Read this post and share your ideas on how we can support a comeback for compassion. (more…)
