Yasodhara Ashram Newsletter- July

July 9, 2009 by Lightwaves

This month’s newsletter from Yasodhara Ashram contains updates from the Ashram, information on the Radha community and upcoming courses. If you didn’t see it in your mail box this month, and want to stay connected then subscribe now! If you are already subscribed, you can skip over this post and stay tuned for next month’s newsletter.

July at the Ashram is looking vibrant with color and activity. The grounds team continues to create beautiful beds of flowers as lush lupins blossom in pink, purple and yellow. The garden has seen the first harvests of broccoli and greens, and new karma yogis enter the sacred space of the Ashram.

Strawberry-SocialThe annual Ashram Strawberry Social was hopping this year, as over 400 people gathered to enjoy community, music and strawberries & whipped cream. A jazz-flavoured performance by the community band kicked off the festivities and was followed by a classical Indian dance offering presented by Darishma Parmar, a post-YDC karma yogini. The Elastic (Ashram) Band offered bhajans with an acoustic Hawaiian-style sound fusing hula-hoop dancing. The event was a success and filled with warm community spirit.

TeensTeen retreat
The air was buzzing with energy as the Ashram anticipated the arrival of teens for the Teen Retreat. This year’s program included workshops on Hatha Yoga, Divine Mother, myth, the Divine Light Invocation, dance and henna. The Teen Program wrapped up in early July, and the young adults (who facilitated this program) experienced a light and joyful approach to the teachings.

Recently the Ashram residents and the young adults watched a movie called “home”. It was profound in its visual presentation focusing on the environmental degradation that humanity has imposed on earth. ‘Home’ presented statistics in a visual way that left people wondering what they could do about problems like land erosion and water contamination. What can you do to make a difference? Watch the movie and give feedback on the Lightwaves Article.

Lightwaves recently introduced a new column called Urban Yogi/Yogini. This month features various reflections from post YDC’er Bjarke Oestergaard. He embarks on a journey that will lead him from the ashram, to his home country in Denmark and then to Montreal. He then plans his trip across Canada by motorcycle to return to the ashram as a karma yogi. Stay tuned for his story on Lightwaves. If you are an Urban Yogi/yogini and would like to share your story, contact Darishma at lightwaves_editor@yasodhara.org.

Divine-Mother-RoomDivine Mother Room
Come and celebrate the opening of the Divine Mother prayer room on July 17th-19th through dance, prayer and song. A space dedicated to worshipping the Divine Feminine in each of us. Give yourself time and space in the Ashram’s beautiful setting to listen to Her messages.

Radha Yoga Youth Outreach held a fundraising Yogathon on June 6th and 7th, bringing together yogis from all over Ottawa and beyond in support of their program.  RYYO is partnered with community agencies in the Ottawa area to provide free yoga classes to youth in need. The program, in its 5th year, is having a hugely positive impact in many young people’s lives – click here to see an inspiring video about this community service work. The event was a great success – $4,000.00 was raised to support the continuation of the program. Program co-ordinator, Jessica Earle-Meadows, and outreach teacher, Michael McCarthy, were recently on television promoting the event – click here to watch the broadcast.
“We apologize to our Lightwaves readers about the RYYO interview. It seems that some computers have had trouble viewing the video on our blog. If you experienced difficulty, you can watch our interview on the Rogers website
