ascent nominated for Utne Award!

April 18, 2009 by claire

They may be closing but they’re still in the running – ascent magazine has been nominated (for the 7th time!) for a 2009 Utne Independent Press Award in the category of Spiritual Coverage. The magazine won the prestigious award in 2003 and 2005.

“This is a very significant recognition for ascent magazine in its final year. As Canada’s pre-eminent magazine on yoga and engaged spirituality, we are proud to be considered a valued part of the movement of independent and non-commercial voices in both yoga and media ” says Vanessa Reid, ascent’s executive publisher.

ascent has held a unique place in the world of yoga, as a small, independent and non-profit publication, and Canada’s first yoga magazine, offering an important resource for spiritual seekers to deepen their practice and broaden their perspective at a time when yoga was quickly moving into the mainstream.

“Although we are closing our doors as a print magazine, we know we have left yoga teachers, students, seekers, and readers an incredible archive of original writing and art exploring the place of yoga in contemporary life,” says ascent’s founding editor Clea McDougall.

Launched as an international magazine in 1999 in response to a growing commercialized yoga movement, ascent became a forum for a more holistic approach to yoga. The magazine was originally a newsletter of the Yasodhara Ashram in British Columbia, and moved to Montreal in the summer of 2000, where it became a hub for young writers and artists.  In 2009, the magazine and its founders decided to bring a decade of award-winning writing to a close.

“ascent magazine stands out as an important independent media voice. We are pleased to honor ascent’s accomplishments with an Utne Independent Press Award nomination,” said Utne editor Karen Olson.

Utne is a national magazine that celebrates the best of the independent press by reading and reprinting from 1,500 independent magazines, newsletters, blogs and more. Since 1989 these prestigious awards have showcased the BEST of the independent press in categories ranging from best new title to political, environmental, cultural, and personal life coverage. Other publications nominated for the award include GeezResurgence and Tricycle. You can read the whole list of nominees here.
