Calgary Radha community – an expanding centre

calgaryhead.jpgCalgary’s Radha Centre endures some change and expands its vision.

As we are regularly reminded, the only constant in life is change. The teachers of the Calgary Radha Yoga Centre are certainly experiencing change this fall. In June, the centre in southwest Calgary closed its doors, the contents were transported to the ashram, and the house was sold, after 25 years of service to the local Radha community.

The Calgary centre on Glenpatrick Drive became part of the ashram’s network of Radha Houses in 1982. Swami Radha stayed there for extended periods in the 1980’s. With so many years of spiritual practice within its walls, the house was for many an oasis from busy city life.

For Faith Stuart, involved with the centre for 21 years, the Radha House was a second home. She spent two to four days a week doing karma yoga there. With or without a house, however, Calgary’s 12 Radha teachers are determined that the Radha identity will stay vibrant. They agree that this change is an opportunity for inner transformation and transition. They believe their opportunities to serve the community at large will be greatly expanded, both in teaching and in other ways. Karma yoga time previously spent on the upkeep of the house can be channeled into other forms of service, such as volunteering for local charities, something Radha teachers began doing a few years ago.

Calgary’s Radha teachers will continue to gather for a class of their own class every three weeks, keeping their own personal work going and refreshing their teaching.

Classes start this week. Hidden Language Hatha Yoga is being taught in yoga studios and community halls around the city. Some Kundalini and Dream classes are being offered in the homes of individual teachers. Satsang made a Light-filled transition to a teacher’s home nearby. I attended Satsang there recently, and while the location is different, devotion and sincerity are well and truly flourishing. Radha’s Light continues to expand, ever-growing into Divine Light.
