because the world needs to know

September 10, 2010 by Andrew Baerthel

As of today, September 10th, the year has brought many challenges and setbacks in terms of the current climate crisis. The negotiations in Copenhagen didn’t bring any significant commitments from world leaders and millions of barrels of oil continue to devastate wildlife habitats along the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic coast. Arctic sea ice is melting at a record pace and landslides are washing away mountainsides in Central America.

All this considered, in one month from today, on October 10th, 2010 or “10-10-10“, environmental advocacy group, is initiating a Global Work Party.

Community action impacting the world

The intention is to celebrate climate solutions at the local level and to encourage people to find ways to make an impact within their communities. Currently there are already over 1,000 groups registered to host events on 10-10-10 in over 100 countries across the globe. Types of events range from a massive bike fix-up party in New Zealand to planting trees in Uganda.

If you are interested in organizing an event in your community, click here to find out more. If you would like to search for events already happening near you, click here.

Last summer, Yasodhara Ashram held an event in support of the meetings in Copenhagen during which everyone who registered pledged to do 10 Divine Light Invocations throughout the course of the day. People from across the Radha Yoga community also registered to take part from afar. The Divine Light Invocation is a powerful meditation practice and is one of the core teachings at Yasodhara Ashram. So whether it is potting some organic plants in your home, doing spiritual practice or any other creative project, we would like to encourage you to ask what you can do at the local level with friends or even by yourself on 10-10-10. If you have any great ideas, please send them in to or share them in the comments box at the bottom of this post. Once you have a plan in mind, implementing it is just one step away!

Also, coming up on the horizon is Blog Action Day 2010. This online event, hosted by, brings thousands of blogs together to discuss a single topic. Last year, the focus was climate change. At Lightwaves, we joined in by offering a post which focused on Yasodhara Ashram’s sustainability initiatives. The article also featured a video interview with local high school students who were taking a workshop at the ashram hosted by the Sierra Club of BC. Our post grabbed a notable mention, making the list of ‘top 7 videos to see from Blog Action Day 09’. To read our post from last year, “Blogging for Climate Change” click here.

This year, the topic is still up for discussion. If you would like to have a say, click here to submit your vote. The topics currently up for voting are: Water, Human Trafficking, Women, Sustainable Food, Hunger and Oceans. You can be sure to expect a post from Lightwaves as we plan on joining in on the action again next month. Stay tuned for more coverage on these two global initiatives!
